If you’re new to wearing dentures, we have some good news for you. We’ve come a long way since your grandma’s false teeth. These days it’s easier than ever to get durable, realistic dentures. However, like anything, the key to keeping something in tip-top shape is proper maintenance and cleaning. This goes for both your dentures and your mouth! Here are a few tips for your oral hygiene routine with dentures to make sure your new smile lasts as long as possible.
Don’t Wear Your Dentures to Bed!
Removing your dentures at night gives your gums a chance to rest and recuperate from being in contact with your dentures all day. This is especially important if you notice red or sore spots on your gums. Giving your gums this break will help make sure your dentures are more comfortable to wear during the day.
Use the Right Supplies to Clean Your Dentures
Just like regular teeth, dentures need to be cleaned every day! You can clean dentures with any soft-bristled brush, but there are denture brushes that look like toothbrushes with large heads that purpose-made for cleaning dentures. Don’t use toothpaste on dentures! Toothpaste is made from abrasive materials that can scratch denture material, dulling their appearance and giving bacteria new microscopic places to hide. Instead, use a mild hand soap or dish soap. Use only warm water to clean dentures, as hot water could cause them to warp.
Soak Your Dentures Overnight
Dentures are designed to be moist at all times. If not kept in a damp environment, some denture materials will eventually crack or warp. That’s why it’s important to soak your dentures overnight in water. You can add an effervescent denture cleansing tablet to the water for an extra boost of cleaning and disinfection.
Clean Your Mouth
Just because you don’t have all your natural teeth anymore doesn’t mean you should throw out your toothbrush. Caring for your gums is still vitally important. As part of your oral hygiene routine, brush your gums and tongue with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste. Use mouthwash as well. Keeping your gums clean under your dentures will help prevent the growth of bacteria or fungus that can cause bad breath or health problems.
