Preventive Care and Dental Cleanings in Falls Church
Keeping your teeth clean and free of plaque helps you enjoy a fresh smile and minimizes your risk for decay or other problems.
Many patients put off visiting the dentist or neglect to make their routine appointments. However, these are important parts of keeping your teeth for a lifetime.
At the office of Robert A. Morabito, DDS we provide dental cleanings and exams in Falls Church, VA. If you’re looking for a new dentist near you, or haven’t been to the dentist in a while, call our office today to schedule your appointment.
Twice Yearly Dental Office Visits
It’s recommended to see your dentist twice a year. These appointments allow for the thorough removal of debris. Your dentist reaches the places where your toothbrush and floss cannot.
During your dental appointment, Dr. Morabito evaluates your smile for potential sites of decay, checking each tooth with a hand mirror and using digital X-rays. Soft tissue is also evaluated to determine the presence of gum disease. After these examinations, your teeth will be cleaned, polished, and flossed.
You’ll leave our office with a fresh smile and a plan for future care, if any additional treatments are needed.
Dental Exams & Cleanings in Falls Church
How Often Do You Need a Checkup?
For most people, two checkups per year is recommended, however, if you have a high risk of gum disease, it may be more beneficial that you come in as frequently as every three months.
A good home oral hygiene routine is very important, but prevention and early detection are key to avoiding tooth decay and gum disease. Regular six-month examinations and cleanings done in our Falls Church office is a significant part of preventative health care to ensure your teeth stay healthy and your smile stays beautiful.
Regular dental exams and cleanings give us a chance to provide tips on caring for your teeth and to detect any problems early. Getting out in front of any complications can make treatment much easier and more affordable.
What Happens During a Dental Exam?
During your exam with Dr. Morabito, he will ask about any health problems you have or medications you are taking and discuss how they may affect your oral health. For instance, if you have diabetes, you are at an increased risk of gum disease. We will also check the following:
Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radio-graphs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions. X-rays aren’t typically needed at every dental visit.
Oral cancer screening: Perform an oral cancer screening which includes your jaw, the sides of your neck and the insides of your lips and cheeks, as well as examining your tongue, and the roof and floor of your mouth.
Gum disease evaluation: Check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
Examination of tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.
Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.
- Check your bite and jaw for problems
Thorough Dental Cleanings in Falls Church
Even if you are very diligent in your oral hygiene, plaque and tartar can build up in hard-to-reach places. During your visit, our professional registered dental hygienist will give your mouth a thorough cleaning with a variety of tools to remove any
hard-mineral buildup (tartar), plaque, and stains on your teeth. Then our hygienist will polish your teeth, using a lightly abrasive paste, then floss and apply fluoride. We will also demonstrate proper cleaning techniques for your teeth or dentures.
Normally, cleanings are not painful, but if you have apprehensions, make sure you let our hygienist know.
Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:
Removal of Tartar (Calculus)
Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
Removal of plaque
Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!
Remove stains and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
Reviewing Your Results
After your cleaning and exam, we will discuss your oral health, including your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and any other oral health problem. We will also recommend preventive measures you can use to improve your oral health.
Additional Preventive Dental Services
In conjunction with teeth cleanings, Dr. Morbito provides the following to ensure your smile is free of damage:
• Fluoride Rinses
• Mouth Guards
• Anti-Bacterial Gum Treatments
Patients who have deep pits or grooves on their back teeth may find it hard to keep them clean and free of debris. By adding a coating of tooth-colored sealant, Dr. Morabito can ensure that decay-causing bacteria do not adhere to teeth.
Patients also benefit from fluoride varnishes, or recommendations of at-home products with fluoride to make enamel resistant to dental cavities.
If you frequently clench or grind your teeth, a mouth guard may be recommended to protect teeth. These guards are slim, custom-made, and create a barrier to absorb pressure and avoid cracking and breaking teeth. Even if your smile presents signs of periodontal infection, Dr. Morabito can prevent progression of the disease with topical treatment.
